I have been playing with the Taranis emulator to see if I can get it to do the things I do with my 4000 on my jets and so far I must say I am very impressed. I do not push the 4000 anywhere near to its max like for example Mike Shellim and the competition glider chaps, but I do have specific needs such as requiring multi-input logic gates driving multiple servos each using different curves, and so on.

Taranis/OpenTx does have some rough edges and missing bits, such as Mike Shellim rapidly identified the lack of a Controls layer, and I found that the emulator uses total rather than centre trims. However the great thing with OpenTx is the possibility that these can be fixed or added or improved fairly quickly by making a good case to the developers, unlike making suggestions to the established tx makers and then waiting for years in vain.

If today I had to choose between the 4000 software and the Taranis/OpenTx software, I would now take the Taranis/OpenTx, it still needs work doing on it but already I think it is better. I would prefer a different case, more easily moveable switches, screen at the top and so on and on, but for the software I think Taranis/OpenTx has the edge now. I own two 4000s and having been “married” to the 4000 for well over a decade it has taken some doing to make me think anything can be better.

If Multiplex would put OpenTx in the new Profi case and drop the Rx prices back to planet earth levels, I would pre-order the Profi now.

I think I am becoming a convert to OpenTx, can’t wait to get my Taranis and try it for real.
