ciao

I see Arend Borst of F3J, etc. fame about once a year at the season's end
NWSS Tournament. He won again this weekend. At this time last year I had
shown him the installation of the all-internal, no-slop Rotary Driver
System in my GENIE thermal sailplane. At that time, no adapter was
available for Volz servos, as is now the case. I am now using them with
Volz servos.
Without a word Arend later custom-fabbed parts to fit his Volz Wing Maxxes
to employ the system. He showed his installation to me this weekend in his
molded Stratos. He had used steel drive shafts of 1/8" diameter for the
more extreme applications he uses this ship in. We were given a treat of
seeing F3J extreme launches during our lunch break.
It was so nice to see that beautiful Stratos without any junk protruding
from the wing and hear it so silently slipping by. Arend tells me that
manufacturer of these high-tech molded ships is now pre-installing machined
pockets in the moving surfaces and also pre-installing the tubular bearings
in the wing ahead of the hingeline for 1/8" drive shafts. Publicity is
forthcoming, at least in European circles, about Arend's innovation and use
of the system.
A study reported on by Martin Hepperle concluded that 5-10% overall drag
was attributable to 4 sets of external linkages (horn, clevis, threaded
rod, etc.), covered or not. That would seem ample reason to use the RDS.
Getting rid of the unsightly clutter we still see so much of on those
otherwise beautiful wings is an extra bonus.
With winter coming on and plans to be made for the 2001 season, this is a
good time to become acquainted with the RDS and get it installed in your
best birds. The Kimbrough Products Molded Couplers can now be obtained with
a 5 adapter tree that fits the output gears of all major brands of servos
and a bunch of the lesser known ones as well. Output arms/wheels,
clevises, ball and sockets, threaded rods, pushrods, tube in tubes, setnuts,
keepers, etc. are not used.
All is detailed in the website below. Arend's e-mail is: aborst@....
